Relax in a green space, between Convention and Vaugirard
Your first stop between classes: Georges-Brassens Park on Rue des Morillons. Nearly 8 hectares of landscaped grounds on the site of the former Vaugirard slaughterhouses, featuring an urban vineyard, a scented garden, and a pond. On weekends, its used book market draws bargain hunters. It’s right next to the Convention or Porte de Vanves metro stations.
Further west, André-Citroën Park stretches 14 hectares all the way to the Seine: themed gardens, two greenhouses, water features, and a tethered balloon that rises to 150 meters. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic after finals.
Shopping and Bargain Hunting
Rue du Commerce is the 15th arrondissement’s main shopping street, lined with chain stores, small boutiques, and outdoor cafés along its entire length. The Convention neighborhood offers a similar experience, but in a quieter setting.
For larger-scale shopping, the Beaugrenelle shopping center, on the banks of the Seine, brings together over a hundred stores and restaurants. And for everyday needs, the district’s markets remain the best option: fresh produce, reasonable prices, and a neighborhood vibe.
Things to Do Without Leaving the District
The 15th has its own attractions. La Ruche, a historic artists’ community near Les Morillons, was once home to Chagall and Soutine. The Maison de la Culture du Japon on Quai Branly offers exhibitions, movies, and workshops. The Swiss Village is lined with antique galleries for lovers of beautiful finds.
And for the view, the Montparnasse Tower and its observation deck on the 56th floor are just a stone’s throw away, on the border with the 14th arrondissement.
Get Around Quickly, Everywhere
This is one of the advantages of a student residence in Paris’s 15th arrondissement: Metro lines 6, 8, 10, and 12 serve the neighborhood, supplemented by the RER C and numerous buses. Line 12 stops at Convention and Vaugirard, while Line 6 heads toward Montparnasse and the Right Bank. Campuses in southern Paris are within easy reach, and the rest of Paris is rarely more than twenty minutes away.
By bike, the “green arc” currently under development will eventually connect Georges-Brassens Park to Montparnasse Station via the Petite Ceinture and André-Citroën Park. It’s a peaceful way to cross the arrondissement.
