According to the legend, the city of Marseille was born from an unexpected marriage between Gyptis, daughter of the king of the Segobriges, who occupied part of what is now the Bouches-du-Rhône department, and Protis, a Phocaean sailor. Even then, Marseille was a cosmopolitan city, open to the world. Qualities that remain true to this day: thanks to its coastal situation, the Phocaean city stands out for its many exchanges with southern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. As a result, it has a rich cultural heritage that can't be found anywhere else.
